Every Amazon seller account runs on one of two selling plans: Individual, which charges $0.99 for each item you sell, or Professional, which costs $39.99 a month. The choice affects more than fees. It decides whether you can advertise, win the featured offer on a product page and use bulk tools. Here is how the two plans compare and how to pick.
Quick answer
If you expect to sell more than about 40 items a month, or you want to advertise or compete for the featured offer, choose Professional. If you are testing the waters with a few sales a month, Individual costs less, and you can upgrade later.
What each plan costs
- Individual: no monthly fee, $0.99 per item sold.
- Professional: $39.99 per month, no per-item fee.
- Both plans pay the same referral fee on every sale, usually 8% to 15% depending on the category, with a $0.30 minimum on most items. Media items add a $1.80 closing fee on both plans.
- FBA is available on both plans, and its fulfillment and storage fees are the same either way.
The break-even point
$39.99 divided by $0.99 is about 40. Below 40 items a month, Individual is cheaper on plan fees alone. Above 40, Professional wins, and the gap grows fast: at 100 sales a month, Individual costs $99 in per-item fees against $39.99 for Professional. Run your own numbers in our Amazon FBA calculator, which includes the Professional plan fee.
What Professional adds
- Featured offer eligibility. Only Professional sellers can win the featured offer, often called the Buy Box, where most sales on a product page happen.
- Amazon Ads. Sponsored Products and other ad types require a Professional plan.
- Bulk listing and inventory tools such as spreadsheets and feeds, instead of listing one product at a time.
- Automated pricing and reports for managing more products.
- Brand tools with Brand Registry, and the option to sell to business buyers.
- More categories, since some restricted categories are open only to Professional sellers with approval.
When Individual makes sense
- You are selling a few used items or testing a product idea.
- You don’t plan to advertise yet.
- You sell products where no other seller competes on the same listing.
How to switch plans
You can move between plans in Seller Central under your account settings. Upgrading to Professional starts the monthly fee right away. Many sellers start on Individual, confirm that a product sells, and upgrade before they advertise or scale.

Questions sellers ask
Can Individual sellers use FBA?
Yes. Fulfillment by Amazon works on both plans, with the same FBA fees.
Can I win the Buy Box on the Individual plan?
No. The featured offer is available only to Professional sellers, which is one of the main reasons growing sellers upgrade.
Do referral fees change by plan?
No. Referral fees depend on the category and price, not on your plan.
