How Long Does an eBay Seller Have to Ship? Handling Time Explained

By the Ask Ecommerce team. Updated November 5, 2026

Seller handing over a packed order

On eBay, the seller decides how fast an order ships by setting a handling time on the listing. Once a buyer pays, the seller has to ship within that handling time and upload tracking. Here is how handling time works, what happens if an order ships late, and what buyers can do if it never arrives.

Quick answer

A seller has as long as the handling time shown on the listing, often one to three business days, to ship after payment clears. The estimated delivery date on the listing includes that handling time plus the shipping service’s transit time.

How handling time works

  • Sellers choose a handling time for each listing, from same day to several business days.
  • The clock starts when the buyer’s payment clears.
  • Handling time counts business days, so weekends and holidays usually don’t count.
  • The seller should upload tracking within the handling time, which shows the order shipped on time.

What happens if a seller ships late

Late shipments count against the seller’s performance, and too many can lower their seller level and visibility. If a seller can’t ship at all, they should contact the buyer and cancel the order rather than leave it waiting.

If your order doesn’t arrive

  1. Check the tracking and the estimated delivery date in your purchase history.
  2. If the date has passed, message the seller through eBay.
  3. If the problem isn’t solved, open an item not received request from your purchase history. Do this within 30 days after the latest estimated delivery date.
  4. If the seller still doesn’t resolve it, you can ask eBay to step in under the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

For sellers: avoid late shipments

  • Set a handling time you can always meet, even on busy days.
  • Buy labels through eBay so tracking uploads automatically.
  • Use vacation settings when you can’t ship for a while.
  • Combine orders smartly, but never at the cost of missing your handling time.
